Xiaomi launches MIUI 8 with bolder colours and added features

MIUI_8 (2)While Xiaomi launched its monster Mi Max handset earlier today with a 6.44-inch Full HD display, the Chinese manufacturer also took the wraps off of the latest version of its firmware, MIUI 8. The firmware is based on Android 6.0 Marshmallow and comes with a new design and a number of new features. Join us after the break for more details.

At its launch event in China, Xiaomi’s CEO Lei Jun announced that its MIUI firmware now has more than 200 million users worldwide, which is an impressive increase in its user base since the 170 million quoted back in February. Once released, MIUI 8 will be compatible with the all the handsets in the Redmi and Mi Note ranges, as well as the following handsets – Mi 2, Mi 2S, Mi 3, Mi 4, Mi 4C, Mi 4S, Mi 5, Mi Max.

MIUI_8 (1)MIUI 8 has been redesigned with an emphasis on bolder colors, which, combined with the flatness, to my eye, take a nod to Google’s material design. Is it still MIUI as we know it? Most definitely, but perhaps MIUI 8 isn’t quite as iOS-ish as previous versions.

Xiaomi_MIUI-8_GalleryThe refreshed Gallery app is now 90% more space efficient, with quick share controls, being able to doodle on drawings, add stickers, as well as enhanced video editing tools that include filters, cropping tools, captions, and the ability to add music.

Xiaomi-MIUI-8_Advanced-CalculationsThe calculator app is more robust and now has the ability to show real-time currency exchange rates, with a built-in unit converter and the ability to perform advanced calculations.

The notes app comes with a redesigned grid layout, a variety of templates, and the ability to make sure your notes stay private with the ability to secure them with a fingerprint or passcode.

Xiaomi_MIUI-8_WallpaperThe Wallpaper Carousel gathers images from 50 different media partners covering 12 categories, with the wallpaper changing automatically on your lock screen every day.

Xiaomi-MIUI-8_ScannerOther new features include the Scanner app that you can use to generate Wechat/Alipay QR codes and even solve math problems. You can use the power management tool prevent resource-hungry apps from starting up, and the power-saving mode will let you freeze an app or activity to help you make the most of your handset’s battery life. There’s also a new Chinese font called Mi Lanting that offers a better reading experience thanks to its 27,533 tweaked characters.

MIUI-8-Release_ScheduleXiaomi says that you can register to beta test MIUI 8 (China ROM) from May 16th, with the actual beta test to begin on June 1st. A developer ROM will also be made available on June 17th. As yet, there’s no word on when the final version is scheduled for release, nor on the availability of the global ROM.
